Remember that as an artist, your relationship with any gallery is a partnership. Generally speaking, a starting point for the gallery’s commission starts at 50%. I based my art gallery contract on a template offered by Scott Burdick and Susan Lyon. The Gallery shall not permit the Artworks to be used for any other purposes without the written consent of the Artist. While many exhibition opportunities have as their primary focus the sale of consigned work, this Exhibition Contract from the Professional Guidelines addresses the issues involved with exhibitions whose main intent is not the sale of work but rather the showcasing of artwork for primarily non-commercial purposes to educate, inform or entertain the public. Do what you can to protect yourself and your artwork with an art gallery contract. All Inventory Sheets shall be signed by Artist and Gallery. The consignment contract or more commonly known as sale on consignment is mainly used in occasional collaborations between an artist and a gallery. The gallery receives, along with a document listing the works consigned by the artist, the artworks that it commits to sale or return within a set period. An art consignment agreement is a contract between an artist and gallery where the artist provides the gallery art at (typically) no cost and, in exchange, the gallery agrees to sell the art for a commission. Artists are presented throughout their careers with a wide variety of exhibition opportunities. The Gallery accepts for exhibition only, those Artworks listed on the attached Inventory Sheet which is part of this Agreement. Both you and the gallery should be responsible to make the relationship work. 3. The Artist appoints The Gallery as agent for the works of art ("the Artworks") consigned under this Agreement, for the purposes of exhibition and sale.
